Dolphins Dominate with Stellar Season and Historic PFF Rankings

In the 2023 NFL season, the Miami Dolphins made waves and turned heads in a manner not seen since 2008, solidifying their place as one of the league’s most compelling stories under the leadership of head coach Mike McDaniel. Their season was marked by a dynamic offense, individual performances that shattered expectations, and a level of team synergy that propelled them into the spotlight. Without diving too deep into the specifics just yet, it’s clear the Dolphins have reemerged as a powerhouse, boasting stats and player achievements that deserve a closer look.

Under McDaniel’s guidance, the Dolphins enjoyed a spectacular season, securing 11 wins for the first time in 15 years. This resurgence wasn’t just a fluke but a testament to the team’s hard work, strategic gameplay, and an offense that consistently delivered, ranking third-best in the NFL with an average of 27.9 points per game.

The roster’s talent was undeniable, with seven Dolphins players earning spots on Pro Football Focus’ top 101 players list for the year. This recognition wasn’t limited to one side of the ball, showcasing the team’s well-rounded excellence.

On defense, Christian Wilkins was a menace for quarterbacks across the league, amassing 61 quarterback pressures and making 34 defensive stops. His performance was pivotal in stifling the opposition’s offense. Meanwhile, safety Jevon Holland proved to be a coverage nightmare, securing an 89.9 PFF coverage grade while also forcing three fumbles, showcasing his exceptional playmaking abilities.

The Dolphins’ offense was nothing short of electric. Running back Raheem Mostert found the endzone 18 times, all the while maintaining an impressive average of 4.8 yards per carry.

His explosiveness was a key factor in Miami’s offensive success. Commanding the offense, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa displayed remarkable efficiency, with an average of 8.1 yards per attempt and a quick release that kept defenses on their heels.

Not to be overshadowed, lineback Andrew Van Ginkel dominated as a pass rusher, earning a 90.6 PFF pass-rushing grade and further establishing himself with a 91.1 overall grade. His efforts underscored a defense that was as disruptive as it was consistent.

The Dolphins’ receiving corps was led by Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, both of whom had seasons worth writing home about. Waddle’s efficiency, demonstrated by averaging 2.63 yards per route run, made him a reliable target downfield. However, it was Tyreek Hill who had a historic season, averaging 3.82 yards per route run—a figure that stands as the second-most efficient ever recorded by PFF.

The 2023 season for the Miami Dolphins was more than a series of games; it was a statement. With McDaniel at the helm, a cadre of players setting and breaking personal bests, and a team that seemed to only grow stronger as the year progressed, the Dolphins have laid down a marker for years to come. As we look ahead, it’s clear that this team, with its blend of veteran leadership and emerging talent, is on a trajectory that could very well redefine its future and perhaps, the future of football.
